UralTone MIDI Thru splits a single MIDI input signal into six separate MIDI (DIN) outputs. The device is very easy and enjoyable to build.

Soldering Guide

Component Identification

Check component values directly from the PCB and follow the images below.

UralTone MIDI Thru 1-6 PCB. Component values are printed on the board; the kit does not include a separate parts list, and the components do not have individual part numbers.
UralTone MIDI Thru 1-6 - All required components.
The newer version of the PCB uses a full-wave rectifier, allowing both AC and DC voltage input regardless of polarity. The circuit includes four diodes, which should be soldered vertically. Bend the diodes as shown in the image—two from the non-striped side and two from the striped side. The cathode (striped side) of the diodes is always on the right.
Install the diodes onto the PCB as shown in the image.
Side view: The striped end of the diodes should always be soldered to the right-side pads.

UralTone MIDI Thru 1-6 - Install the resistors onto the PCB. Pay attention to the color codes. You can also measure the resistor values using a multimeter.

UralTone MIDI Thru 1-6 - Install the vertically mounted resistors. Resistors do not have a specific orientation, so they can be installed in either direction.
UralTone MIDI Thru 1-6 - Install the capacitors as shown. For electrolytic capacitors (brown cylindrical components), observe the correct polarity. The negative side is marked on the capacitor.

UralTone MIDI Thru 1-6 - Install the DIN connectors as shown. Each connector should first be soldered at one pin so that adjustments can be made to align them neatly.
Insert the LED into place. In the image, the LED is installed in a plastic enclosure. For the panel kit, it is recommended to install the LED upright, as the ends remain open. Note the LED polarity.

If installing in a plastic enclosure, trim the legs of the connectors (DIN and DC jack) as shown above. For the panel kit, leave the DIN connector legs at their original length for proper fitting.

UralTone MIDI Thru 1-6 - Mark the drilling points using a scribe, screw, or any sharp tool. ABS plastic is soft, so drilling tends to "wander." It is best to start with small holes and gradually enlarge them, fitting the circuit into the enclosure as you go. A round file can be used for final adjustments.
Panel kit version
An alternative and easier enclosure option is the panel kit. The enclosure spacers are designed to fit perfectly with the PCB if the DIN connector legs are not shortened.
Screwing in the spacers
Screw the spacers onto one of the panels. You can choose which side of the panel to display outward.
Placing the board between the spacers
Place the circuit board between the spacers. Ensure the text on the cover aligns with the correct connectors.
Attaching the second panel
Attach the second panel. The MIDI Thru box is ready!
The exposed surface of the regulator is grounded and voltage-free, so no insulation is required.
For power distribution, you can solder an additional DC jack to allow power chaining to another device. The instructions are for the newer board but should work with the older version as well.
Solder the connector onto the back of the other as shown in the image. Solder the connection wire of the top connector to the pad on the PCB. In the older board version, the wire is soldered to the anode (unmarked end) of the 1N4007 diode. To ensure a neat fit, you may need to file down some plastic from the body of the lower connector.
