Blackface build kits use a crimpable strain relief. Installing this without the dedicated tool is difficult. This article’s photo series demonstrates how to install a crimpable strain relief using needle-nose pliers and a hammer.

Bend the power cord into a sharp angle where the strain relief will be placed. Plan ahead for how much of the cable needs to be stripped for internal wiring. Removing the connector afterward or stripping the wire while installed can be challenging.

Position the strain relief so that the small tab sits at the bend in the cable.

Guide the strain relief into the mounting hole with the U-shaped section first. This allows the chassis hole to keep the strain relief in shape, preventing it from spreading sideways when inserting the smaller part. Use needle-nose pliers to help guide the strain relief into place.

Pre-installation of the strain relief from another angle.

Assist the smaller part of the strain relief into the chassis hole. It is enough for the entire edge of the strain relief to be in the mounting hole. Keep pressing the strain relief against the chassis constantly—it tends to pop out of place.

Position the needle-nose pliers over the strain relief as shown. Do not squeeze or damage the wire with the pliers.

Tap lightly on the hinge of the pliers with a hammer. You do not need much force—this is not like hammering a nail into wood. Also, do not hammer the wire itself.

The strain relief is now installed in place.
