Finishing Supplies

Surface treatment is one of the most demanding stages of instrument building. We prefer traditional surface treatments.

Shellac is a great varnish. It gives a really beautiful surface that can be renewed and repaired afterwards. Shellac is better known for finishing violins, but nothing prevents it from being used on electric guitars.

Nitro lacquers give a beautiful surface, but they are really toxic, so caution is important (in practice, spraying nitro must be done either in the paint cabinet or outside).

Waxes are completely natural products and you can easily make them yourself. There are many instructions on Google. Note that many commercial ready-made wax mixes are toxic, even though the manufacturers often imply otherwise. So you should keep operational safety in mind in these areas as well.

Plastic varnishes are easy to use, they are not very toxic, but they do not get the surface of traditional varnishes, and the plasticity may be visible in the end result. The hard and thick varnish also resists vibrations.
