"Ref1 was AudioVideo.fi's second comparison speaker after Aurelia Graphica. The Ref1 Plus is a further development from the original Ref1, but I always harbored a dream of a very high-quality yet smaller speaker. I prototyped various designs under the working name Ref2, starting from compact coaxial three-way systems, but ultimately, the finest components of the SB Acoustics Satori series formed the simple and exceptionally high-quality core of the Ref2 speaker.

Ref2 is not minimally small because it is meant to be extremely high-quality, not just extremely small and as high-quality as possible relative to that. The Satori MW19TX-8 / Textreme mid-bass driver features an open design that minimizes reflections from the enclosure to the cone, a very light and rigid cone, and a low-distortion motor. A good motor not only avoids harmonic distortion but also prevents intermodulation distortion, which can make the sound appear "flat-gray" and as if coming through a "curtain." For some hi-fi enthusiasts, balance might suggest mediocrity because they have experienced sonically neutral speakers that still suffer from significant intermodulation distortion. Similarly, the Satori TW29BNWG-8 tweeter’s motor starts from a basis of low distortion, featuring a very light and rigid dome, and a waveguide that minimizes cabinet diffraction and optimizes directivity well to match the 19-centimeter mid-bass driver.

Sonically, Ref2 is in a high class compared to any moderately priced bookshelf speaker and many three-way floor speakers. It does not have its own sound character; it is just pure and transparent. The treble is bright, but thanks to its lack of distortion and resonance, it is completely unstrained. The stereo image is precisely three-dimensional for a speaker of this size, and the sound does not get congested like cheaper speakers, even when approaching maximum sound pressure levels."

The kit includes all necessary parts except for wooden parts. This includes crossover components, screws, circuit board, terminals, cable, speakers...

The enclosure is designed to be optimal for sound quality, but you can experiment with other shapes and styles depending on the usage (sometimes appearance comes first). However, it's advisable to keep the internal volume and port dimensions the same.
