UralTone Pearl Satori highend DIY speaker kit
UralTone Pearl is a compact high-end two-way speaker designed by Samu Saurama. Pearl uses SB Acoustic's Satori series speaker elements. The woofer has a papyrus cone and the tweeter is provided by a textile dome element. The DIY kit set is assembled with very high-quality parts.
The pearl was born for two reasons. One was a curiosity about SB Acoustics ’particularly fine Satori speaker elements and the other was a desire to build a compact but still high-performance and beautiful-sounding speaker for living rooms.
The sound quality of a speaker is always affected by many things, but behind Helmi’s pleasantly easy yet translucent and immediate sound, there are two clear basic features.
IM distortion minimization
SB acoustics Satori series is in the same level as the Excelit Seas or even the most expensive models at ScanSpeak. They, therefore, emphasize performance and technical progress rather than affordability. By looking at the raw responses of the elements (the raw response, i.e. the frequency response of the element without the crossover filter), one does not see the subtlety of the Sators. However, one essential feature is the smallness of the central modulation distortion (IM distortion) compared to the basic elements.
For some hi-fiers, the word neutral is not praise, more like it means kind of boring. I can well imagine that this is largely due to the fact that they have listened to speakers whose frequency response and power response are neat, but due to the very cheap speaker elements, there is a lot of central modulation distortion. A single sine wave signal can be reproduced as intended, but when music is always a million overlapping signals, the element will not be able to reproduce them without the signals interacting, i.e., modulating each other, resulting in central modulation distortion.
By minimizing that central modulation distortion and, of course, also keeping the harmonic distortion as low as possible at the designed sound pressure levels, the speaker is still neutral, but not at all dull or even gray, but translucent, vibrant, and inspiring to listen.
Smooth and low directivity
The Pearl Satori is a small speaker, the bass element is a five-inch and the tweeter is a 1.1-inch ring radiator. The five-inch bass doesn’t become much directional in that part of the mid-range. The ring radiator also has a uniform directivity over almost its entire operating range, and the combination results in a speaker whose tone and volume change extremely little when moving from a straight axis to sides.
As a result, Helmi draws a very large and spacious stereo image, where all the instruments are in place, but at none of them does a note shine brightly that reads the place in space coordinates with decimal precision. And then, on the other hand, Helmi’s usable listening area is very wide. The pearl sounds great in your best listening position as well as around the corner.
Great little speaker
After all, the little Pearl is, compared to my other designs, which contain 15-inch drivers, in plural... But not so small that it would not satisfy the needs of even the most demanding music listener very well as long as the required sound pressures are not wildly high. The neighbors' attention-grabbing apartment buildings do well with Helmi's sound pressure equipment. Bass reproduction is succulent and typically extends to 40 Hz or less in a room. The bass is also toned and sturdy enough. Like my other boxed speakers, the Pearl is designed to work next to a wall. If you place it far away from the walls, the tone may be too thin.
The most impressive feature of the pearl, in addition to its confusingly small size, is its ability to combine translucency and resolution with comfort and non-stress. The speaker both prompts you to play the next recording and does not cause listening fatigue.
The small speaker is not particularly sensitive and when Helmi is still four ohms in nominal impedance, I recommend a minimum amplifier power of about 20 watts per channel and with tube amplifiers you should try the amplifier's four-ohm output, if you can only find one in your own amplifier.
As for construction, it’s a note that because the treble doesn’t have a deep orientation, it responds clearly to the shape of the case. The bevels on the front panel are not only embellishments, but they substantially reduce housing diffractions, i.e. reflections from the edges, and thus keep the frequency response clearer and the stereo image more accurate than would be achieved with a non-beveled housing.

Saurama is a well-known long-line hifi journalist who has published numerous speaker projects and designed many kits to UralTone and other manufacturers. He has profiled himself as an unwavering supporter of uncompromising sound reproduction and do-it-yourself speaker design. Everyone has the right to enjoy great sound, even at a reasonable cost. This is best accomplished by building the speakers themselves.
The kit comes with every needed electrical components for a single speaker: speaker elements, crossover parts, cabling, screws for speakers, connector terminals, cirtcuit board, padding, back panel, binding posts and bass reflex tubes.
The pearl is designed for small and medium-sized living rooms for lovers of uncompromising sound quality.
What does the kit include?
All parts in one speaker except wooden parts. So please order 2pcs to get a stereo pair.
All parts are of very high quality. The speaker elements are designed in Denmark and the crossover filter parts come from Jantzen Audio (or when availability is poor at an equivalent level from Intertechnik), a well-known manufacturer among high-end enthusiasts. The gold-plated speaker terminals come from a high-quality Taiwanese manufacturer. The whole packed is crowned by the back panel texts made of real gold.
From our point of view, a little extra price for quality parts is worth it.
We offer unlimited technical support to buyers of building kits via email! The customer is not left alone - we help as much as necessary.
If you want a pre-punched crossover filter we can do it for an additional fee. However, we encourage all builders to learn the secrets of soldering.
Enclosure drawings are included with the kit. The prototypes are made by Kuviopuu. They have drawings and the professionalism to make attractive and high quality cases. In other words, if you are unable to build the enclosures yourself, ask for an offer: http://kuviopuu.fi
